Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a Amazon founder.
