The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner Unilever stopped the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with his partner, revealed how he will personally create this new product as part of an individual collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed that the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem for Support
The entrepreneur stated via an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, that closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally established several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen revealed how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, after many years with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
